North-east landmarks prove profitable for Darlington high-fliers

Hexham Abbey Repairs
Work taking place at Hexham Abbey

A variety of North East landmarks are currently undergoing restoration and repair with the help of a Darlington-based specialist company.

Stone Technical Services has won a number of new contracts, worth in the region of £50,000, with organisations around the region as it continues to grow throughout the UK.

In Northumberland, Stone's restoration experts have completed lead-work repairs to stained glass windows at Hexham Abbey, and Hexham Council contracted Stone to rebuild the chapel spires and complete vital conservation work at St Andrew's Cemetery, in Hexham, which dates back to the 1800s.

In Newcastle city centre, Stone has secured further work with the City Council to complete essential maintenance at the Discovery Museum on Blandford Square and also at the Guildhall on the Quayside.

In addition, Stone's team is carrying out lightning protection surveys for Gentoo and completing a range of repairs relating to weather damage at the Cornmill Centre in Darlington.

Family-run Stone Technical Services has bucked the downward trend of the last year and has seen an increase in new contracts around the country. As a result, already this year the company has opened new offices in Cheshire and London, adding to its HQ in Darlington and its operation in Pinner, Middlesex.

Stone now employs a team of 28 and plans to continually grow its workforce and open new regional offices throughout 2011 as well as increase its £2 million turnover by 25%.

Managing director, Dave Stone said: "The recent new contracts that we've secured show the range of services that we provide which is vital in the current environment. Thanks to our specialism in a host of areas- from high-level repairs on shopping centres to the conservation of ancient monuments- we're constantly able to expand around the UK and put the North East on the map."
